C Smith Creations – Artwork on a Mission

80

Coreen Smith hails from Kingston, the capital parish of Jamaica and is the skillful mastermind behind her home business, C. Smith Creations. She is a visual Artist with a keen sense of creativity.

Coreen seeks to capture within her art pieces (wearable and wall art ) a romantic, ethereal and whimsical essence. Each work of art is masterfully created and colourfully painted on the wood of choice-Cedar.

She portrays through her work the luminesce of the sunset, majesty in the moonlight and the magic within nature; from her hand painted necklaces, earrings, bag tags and bookmarks to her wall art canvas paintings.

I had the wonderful opportunity to hear from her first hand about what inspired her and her outlook for the future. She graciously accepted and took the time out of her busy schedule to share her story with us.

Coreen grew up in Portmore with her mother and her mother’s then husband. She attended the Holy Childhood High School and Portmore Community College where she studied Business. She mentioned that she was distracted by the other career paths that she thought she should have been pursuing, though they always felt unnatural.

What fueled your passion to do this form of Artwork?

. “ As I embarked on a journey to know myself more, I realized that self- expression was more important to me and that was the root of my dissatisfaction with the jobs I undertook. I was invited by my brother one night in December 2016 to a paint and sip event and that was it. Something awoke in me. I went and bought paint, brushes, and a canvas pad. I found tutorials on YouTube and started to do my thing. That didn’t last long although as I got pregnant that very month and soon began to loathe the smell of site and paintings. I literally felt like I wanted to stab them. So for the duration of my pregnancy I did no painting and had to interest whatsoever. I honestly thought that was the end of it for me but I was wrong. “

What is your fondest childhood memory?

Attending choir practice at the church I used to attend. I always look back and reminisce on those times. The choir was like a little family and full of love.

What is your inspiration and what keeps you motivated?

“I hate routine and just being able to get up every day and express myself freely through my art is great inspiration. My son and the need to provide for him keeps me motivated.”

What had been your Greatest accomplishment?

“Being a mommy; though I’m a single mom and that definitely has its challenges, my son is the best part of my life. Cuddling with him at nights as he falls asleep is ‘it’ for me.”

What is your favorite life quote?

“She designed a life she love”.

What positive message do you have for the Youth?

“Take the time to figure out who you are, what you’re good at and what you love and how you can use it to make money. Don’t be in a hurry to commit to any particular career path because others are doing so. Also while you’re figuring out all of these actively seek out clubs, organizations and people etc. that can help you in that department. There’s nothing wrong with taking on jobs too that will provide you with work experience/ethics etc. for when you finally decide what path you want to take. In essence, you don’t need to rush, but be proactive in the meantime. “

What is your advice for aspiring Entrepreneurs ?

“Start where you are. Even if you don’t have the money required to do all you’re dreaming of, step out with what you have and let that propel you forward. Use it to gain exposure etc. “

What are you looking forward to most in the future?

“Abundance in all areas of my life.”

Where do you wish to take your business in the future?

“I definitely intend on being recognized internationally. As an artist, I can work from anywhere in the world and I want to keep it that way, but I want to be shipping my products to customers as far as possible.”

Coreen has a determined spirit to be successful and is building momentum to grace the world with her artistic talent in a gift of Visual Artwork.
